Scunthorpe Central Park Sports Academy
RIBA international Competition - Shortlisted scheme
The position of the building in the road frontage, follows and reinforces the existing building line, and forms a gatehouse to the park sports facilities.
The design aims to be a dramatic and inviting building which will promote its facilities and functions to every one passing through its ‘vortex’ entrance. The café will be accessible to all and there will be views into the building through glazed screens.
The upper floor is cut away to allow views up to the roof as you pass through the central route, the ceiling will be a smooth double curve like a reflective whale belly over head. The upper courts and halls will be translucent and reflective so that movement and activity can be sensed from the café area. Screens on outside of the building can be used to show sporting events to spectators in the external plaza area.
The entry to the building sports facilities is monitored and controlled, but enticing, it is hoped that the building will act to help promote participation in sport.
The pool is also well equipped to host events with an audience. Screens at the end of the building will show sporting events to the public in the plaza.
Expansion of the building can be achieved by, for a sports hall building a second similar structure abutting the building in the area now designated as plaza, the zones within the A frame structure will allow circulation to be linked and the new hall would be able to use the original changing rooms and facilities. Smaller studio spaces could be added with in the original skin by extending the second floor over the sports hall.
